Amy M. Reed, PhD, CRNA is the Assistant Program Director of the York College of Pennsylvania/WellSpan Health Nurse Anesthetist Program. She practices clinically with her students at WellSpan Health York Hospital and WellSpan Apple Hill Surgical Center. Reed was born and raised in York, Pennsylvania and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthro-Human Biology from Temple University in Philadelphia. She was first introduced to nurse anesthesia at Temple University and therefore, decided to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Drexel University in Philadelphia. At Drexel University, she completed the Accelerated Nursing Degree Program. She worked in the Open-Heart Intensive Care Unit at WellSpan Health York Hospital before graduating with a Master of Science degree from the York College of Pennsylvania/WellSpan Health Nurse Anesthetist Program. In 2019, she graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
In 2016, Reed accepted a faculty position at her alma mater, York College of Pennsylvania/WellSpan Health Nurse Anesthetist Program. In 2018, she accepted the Assistant Program Director position. Throughout her clinical experience, her interest in the subjectivity of preoperative gastric content assessment grew. She took an interest in the utility of gastric ultrasonography for gastric content assessment. Reed received the Hugh & Maria Roach Fellowship from the AANA Foundation to pursue her original research. Reed’s dissertation is titled: Type II Diabetes Mellitus: Relationships Between Preoperative Physiologic Stress, Gastric Content Volume and Quality and the Risk of Pulmonary Aspiration. In addition, she published with her mentor, Richard E. Haas, PhD, CRNA, PHRN, in the AANA Journal in 2020 highlighting her doctoral work. She now teaches point-of-care ultrasonography in conjunction with her foundational anesthesia courses. In 2021, Reed was nominated by her students and awarded the Pennsylvania Association of Nurse Anesthetists (PANA) Didactic Instructor of the Year. In 2024, Reed was named one of Drexel University's 40 under 40 recognizing "young Dragons" who are making their mark in their profession and community.
Reed is married to her husband of 10 years. They have three boys ranging from 8 months to 4 years old and a harlequin Great Dane. Reed says that she cannot imagine being anything other than a nurse anesthetist and feels incredibly blessed to work with the most incredible and brilliant mentors, colleagues, and students.
