A Simplified Decision Algorithm to Proceed with an Elective Procedure in Patients with a History of Cocaine and Methamphetamine Use (1 Class A CE)

No professional organization has published clinical practice guidelines or position statements on the risk stratification or perioperative management of patients with a positive drug screening for cocaine or methamphetamine. This lack of guidance has led to inconsistent practice among anesthesia professionals. We developed an evidence-based algorithm to guide anesthesia professionals on the risk stratification, screening, and management for patients with a history of cocaine or methamphetamine use in the elective surgery setting. This algorithm can be applied in various case studies to assess its effectiveness in supporting decision-making. Lastly, we will discuss the limitations of the research, ethical considerations associated with drug screening, and recommendations for future research and practice.
