Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonist and the Risk of Pulmonary Aspiration: An Update on Current Recommendations and the Utility of Gastric Ultrasound (1 Class A CE with 1 Pharm)
This presentation will discuss the current recommendations regarding preoperative management of GLP-RAs and the utility of gastric ultrasound in preventing the risk of pulmonary aspiration in patients taking these medications. GLP-1RAs are proving to be very effective medications for diabetic management as well as generalized weight loss which has increased its utilization in the diabetic and obese patient populations. Despite numerous benefits that these medications offer, significant gastrointestinal side effects have been noted including gastroparesis. There is consensus in the literature that patients taking GLP-1RAs who have followed current fasting guidelines are presenting to the operating room with full stomachs increasing the risk of pulmonary aspiration. Point-of-care gastric ultrasonography is a valid and feasible tool to assess gastric contents in diabetic and obese patients highlighting the need for anesthetists to become proficient in this skill.
