While our knowledge base on AIN has grown exponentially in recent years, there is much work still to be done. Until we have more definitive evidence, we must face the challenge of individualizing our young children’s anesthetic plans with practices that promote safety while minimizing the risks of long-term adverse outcomes. Along with that, we must stay informed so that we can educate caregivers and assist them and other healthcare practitioners in decision making.
Learning Objectives:
Compare and contrast the significance of physiologic versus anesthesia induced neuroapoptosis in children.
Describe the historical and current evidence related to anesthesia effects on the developing brain.
Discuss the lessons learned and current best practice recommendations for formulating anesthetic management plans for young children.
