From Stress to Success: Performance-Enhancing Psychological Skills for Healthcare Providers (1 Class A CE)

The stress that we experience during critical patient encounters can have an adverse effect on our cognitive and psychomotor performance. Our introduction to PST focuses on three performance-enhancing psychological skills (PEPS): breathing techniques, self-talk, and mental imagery. These skills have long been shown to enhance performance in high-stress professions.

This presentation will provide learners with the knowledge and skills to recognize the physiologic stress response and its effects on performance, incorporate PEPS in their clinical practice, and understand the current evidence regarding PST.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the physiologic stress response and its effects on cognitive and psychomotor performance.
  • Describe performance-enhancing psychological skills and their value in high-stress clinical settings.
  • Summarize the current evidence regarding psychological skills training and identify unmet research needs for future inquiry.
